If you experience an accident or wake up one morning with a severe toothache, we want you to know that we’re flexible and will work with you to cope with these situations and get you into our office as soon as we can.
What is a Dental Emergency?
The following is a short, though not comprehensive, list of some common dental emergencies. But remember, if something strikes you as an emergency, even if it’s not on this list, give us a call and let us help you determine how best to proceed.
- A broken or chipped tooth
- Tooth gets knocked out
- Something is stuck between your teeth
- Broken crown or other dental work
- Severe toothache
- Injury/Bleeding in your mouth
A persistent or intense toothache may indicate an infection inside the tooth that could require a root canal to remove bacteria and relieve pain. Prompt treatment is essential to prevent the infection from spreading and to save the natural tooth whenever possible.
What to do in a Dental Emergency
If you or someone you love experiences a dental emergency, we recommend that you give Svans Dentistry PLLC a call immediately. Once you’ve described the situation to us, we can then counsel you over the phone and answer your questions. If necessary, we will find a way to get you into our office for immediate treatment. This is very important because treating the emergency in a timely manner can save you pain and cost in the future.
Never try to handle the problem yourself, by attempting to repair your dental work at home, for example. Coming into the dentist means you will be treated in a sterile environment by a professional. It is a much safer option.
If you are experiencing a painful toothache, on the other hand, there are measures you can take to lessen the pain while waiting to see the dentist. You can use an over-the-counter pain pill and/or a cold compress. If your tooth is broken or knocked out, save the pieces and bring them with you when you come to see us.
